The Importance of Settings

It is always nice to know that one is not alone. In this case, I have found someone else who believes that fantasy settings are worth writing about. Nicola Alter, from University of Queensland, has written an interesting piece on how to write engaging settings for secondary worlds: Creating a sense of place in fantasy fiction (TEXT vol 15 no 1).

Although Alter approaches the subject from the opposite side from me, as it were (I’m more interesting in how those settings work once they have been written), we clearly agree about a number of things, and anyone else who’s interested in the subject may enjoy this.
